Pray with Colombia, July 30, 2023

Prayers for Colombia

Good God,
you always sow
because you harbor hope…
But on more than one occasion
seeds don’t grow,
and get lost among the everyday rubble,
and in history.
It is so,
like the woman in the parable
we implore,
that you do not stop kneading our life,
nor the seeds of peace
that you insist on putting in our life;
Do not let us fall into temptation,
to spoil,
to anchor loss,|
and instead welcome us like the good earth,
like the dough that finally ferments,
grows and bears fruit.
Amen.

Mission Moment from Colombia

Upon landing in Tumaco, an almost direct road takes us, as part of the delegation from Justapaz, to the center of the municipality. Then there are some curves and the infinite gray Pacific. Towards the shore of calm waves are the markets, the kiosks with pyramids of fruit and fresh fish. Children run between the pilings of businesses and restaurants over the dark waters in the late afternoon. Flanking the landscape, we see army brigades and young soldiers armed with very long rifles under the palm trees of the coast on the bridge that connects the islands of Tumaco. After all, almost 13 armed groups have a presence in the department of Nariño.

Esther, the daughter of the pastor of the Tabernacle Church, is called “pastor.” She is tall, Afro-Colombian, and calls her father: “apostle.” Life has ways of making us responsible witnesses of what we have experienced. That is what pastoral action is about.

Thus, they carry rolling vigils and prayer services in homes and streets where it is scary. Instead, they are humanitarian journeys through neighborhoods where urban gangs prevail. Then they take the gospel and request the cessation of the conflict. At these church services, guys sometimes arrive with artillery in their hands and lined with grenades.

“We want to go from religion to the kingdom, empathy, and charity,” says Esther*. Because the exercise of accompaniment of the church only makes sense with the communities outside the temple. Sometimes it turns out that one of these boys from armed groups converts, but he already has arrest warrants. The “apostle” could welcome them into the congregation, but they have no guarantees before the law. Because this is not just a matter of “accepting the Lord,” but they are also matters of law that would have to be faced,” she acknowledges.

On more than one night, young people from groups outside the law arrive at Pastor Esther’s house and call her “aunt.” She welcomes them and talks about their lives and the Bible with them. It’s like that woman who kneads yeast with flour. You must wait for everything to ferment.

Buen Dios,

que no dejes de amasar nuestra vida
ni las semillas de paz
que insistes poner en nuestra vida;

de echar a perder
de dar por pérdida
y acógenos como la buena tierra,

Momento Misionero: Amasar levadura

Al aterrizar en Tumaco, la delegación de Justapaz se sumerge en el tránsito sobre una carretera casi directa lleva hasta el centro; algunas curvas, y el Pacífico gris, infinito. Hacia la orilla de olas tranquilas se encuentran los mercados, los kioscos con pirámides de frutas, y pescado fresco. Los niños corren entre los pilotes de los negocios y restaurantes sobre las aguas oscuras en la tarde. Flanqueando el paisaje, el salitre, los batallones y los soldados jóvenes armados con metrallas larguísimas debajo de las palmas de la costa sobre el puente que conecta las islas de Tumaco. A fin de cuentas, son casi 13 los grupos armados que tienen presencia en el departamento de Nariño.

A, Ester, la hija del pastor de la Iglesia Iglesia de Adoración, le llaman pastora. Ella, alta, afrocolombiana, a su papá le llama apóstol. La vida siempre tiene formas de hacernos testigos responsables de lo vivido. De eso trata la agenda pastoral. Así, llevan vigilias rodantes y cultos en hogares por calles donde da miedo pasar. Son, más bien, recorridos humanitarios por barrios donde impera la presencia de bandas urbanas. Llevan la palabra y solicitan el cese del conflicto. A esos cultos, a veces llegan tipos con rifles en la mano y forrados de granadas.

“Queremos pasar de la religión al reino; a la empatía y la caridad”, dice Ester. Porque el ejercicio de acompañamiento de la iglesia va hacia afuera, con las comunidades fuera del templo. A veces resulta que uno de estos muchachos de grupos armados se convierte, pero ya tiene órdenes de captura. El apóstol podría acogerlos en la congregación, pero no tienen garantías frente a la ley. Porque esto no es solo un mero asunto de “aceptar” al Señor, sino que también son asuntos de ley que habría que enfrentar”, reconoce. En más de una noche, a la casa de la pastora Ester llegan jóvenes de grupos al margen de la ley y le dicen “tía”. Ella los acoge, conversa, habla de la Biblia y amasa la levadura con la harina. Sólo le queda esperar a que todo fermenter.
