Pray with Guatemala, October 30, 2022

Prayers for Guatemala

Lord, you send us, like your first disciples, with authority and power to heal, confront evil and bring salvation. Make us clear and strong in your mission.

Lord, we confess that we have allowed ourselves to be absorbed by obstacles. We are so heavy that we cannot even walk. Break our bonds. Make us unite with those who suffer, incarnating ourselves in pain to bring your salvation.

Lord, we are afraid of those who oppose your cause. Help us to feel within us the life-giving force of love so that together, with good organization, we face the tyrants who hoard wealth and power that hurt so many.

We are yours, your people, here in this congregation that prays to you today and in Guatemala, where young people struggle to rescue your work. Join us to protect them and with their effort to raise awareness with those who stopped listening to your voice. Bring us closer to the deaf here to share a song that wakes them up and repairs your dreams of redemption.

In your name, we pray, amen, so be it.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Guatemala

Jesus sent his disciples on a mission with direct instructions to avoid the superfluous and to take a firm stand against antagonism. From this sending of the Lord, we must evaluate ourselves. Suppose we see the pain, and it does not move us. Indeed, we are burdened with many obstacles, be it a full wallet, a comfortable house, living without opposition, being well dressed, or being in a privileged situation. Maybe it does not hurt us that a river and the environmentalist who protected it are killed. We could be indifferent that people from our country monopolize land in other parts, displaces the locals, or kill them if they oppose the dispossession. If that is the case, we are too comfortable in this death system.

If so, Jesus calls us and sends:

to proclaim ecological conversion against ecocide,
to exorcise the demons that, in pursuit of profit, kill Mother Earth and her caretakers,
to heal communities broken by companies that buy wills and governments sold to them.

Let us listen to the young artists and scientists, faithful witnesses in Guatemala. With painting and poetry, they make aware of the anguished cries of nature. Let us hear the youth who scientifically document the quality and volume of water in the springs that feed the Los Esclavos River after a Canadian mining company extracting silver contaminated the water with arsenic. Let us find inspiration in these witnesses who call on Guatemala to stop exploitation and care for common goods.

Let us release what binds us and unite as witnesses of Jesus.

Señor, tú, nos envías, igual que a tus primeros discípulos, con autoridad y poder para sanar, enfrentar el mal y traer salvación.

Haznos claros y fuertes en tu misión. Señor, confesamos que nos hemos dejado absorber con estorbos, estamos tan pesados que ni caminar podemos. Rompe nuestras ataduras. Haz que nos unamos con los y las que sufren, encarnándonos en el dolor para traer tu salvación.

Señor, nos amedrentamos frente a los que se oponen a tu causa. Ayúdanos a sentir dentro de nosotros la fuerza vivificante del amor, para que juntos, con buena organización, enfrentemos a los tiranos queue acaparan riquezas y poder que a tantos lastiman. Tuyos somos, tu pueblo tuyo, aquí en esta congregación que hoy te ora, y en Guatemala donde jóvenes están luchando con empeño por rescatar tu obra. Únenos para protegerles, y sé con ellos en su esfuerzo de hacer conciencia con los que dejaron de escuchar tu voz. Acércanos a los sordos de acá para compartirles una canción que los y las despierte y repare en ellos tus sueños de redención.

En tu nombre lo pedimos, amén, que así sea.

Jesús envió a sus discípulos a la misión con instrucciones directas de evitar lo superfluo y de asumir un posicionamiento firme contra el antagonism.

A partir de este envío de Señor, debemos evaluarnos. Si vemos el dolor y no nos conmueve, seguramente es que estamos cargados de muchos estorbos, sea la billetera llena, la casa cómoda, viviendo sin oposición, bien vestiditos, en situación de privilegio. Si no nos duele que se mate un río y al ambientalista que lo protegía, si nos resulta indiferente que gente de nuestro país acapare tierras en otras partes, desplace a los lugareños o los asesine si se oponen al despojo; si es así, es que estamos
demasiado acomodados en este sistema de muerte.

Si es así, Jesús nos llama y envía a:

a proclamar conversión ecológica contra el ecocidio,
a exorcizar los demonios que en afán de ganancias matan a la Madre Tierra y a sus cuidadores,
a curar comunidades resquebrajadas por empresas que compran voluntades y gobiernos que se
venden a ellas.

Oigamos a los jóvenes artistas y científicos, fieles testigos en Guatemala. Ellos con la pintura y la poesía hacen conciencia de los angustiosos gritos de la Naturaleza. Juventudes que con su ciencia documentan la calidad y el volumen del agua en los manantiales que nutren el río Los Esclavos, a los cuales una empresa canadiense, extrayendo plata contamina con arsénico. Hallemos inspiración en estos testigos que llaman a Guatemala a que pare la explotación y cuide los bienes comunes.

Soltemos lo que nos ata y unámonos como testigos de Jesús.
