Prayers for Mexico

God, you are like a Father and a Mother to us.
We thank you for the testimony of your Word incarnated in your Son Jesus Christ, who brings us the good news of the arrival of your Kingdom.
We receive you with joy because there is fullness of life in You. Thank you for being part of our history and sharing our humanity.
We celebrate that you come to meet us and awaken in us the joy of simple faith and the desire to continue being your disciples.
Encourage us with your Spirit to continue proclaiming your Gospel in words and actions.
We pray for the churches in Mexico that your Spirit breathes to renew and strengthen their testimony in this time of uncertainty and suffering.
We pray for our brothers and sisters crushed by oppression and injustice, remember them and bring them liberation and healing.
United in one body, we present to you the fruit of our witness and commitment to the Gospel of the Kingdom.
Through Jesus Christ, who rose again. Amen.

Mission Moment from Mexico

Chapter 24 of the Gospel of Luke collects testimonies from the first Christian communities about the resurrection of Jesus. Women and men who followed Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem were witnesses that the Lord had risen. Before this, Jesus’ disciples experienced a moment of crisis: the crucified Jesus of Nazareth. They hoped that he was the one who would liberate Israel (Lk. 24: 19-21). These were times of uncertainty and hopelessness! There was a lot of pain, fear, and confusion. How could they continue believing in the Kingdom of God announced by Jesus?

We have been facing the health crisis caused by Covid 19 for a little over a year. For Mexico, this situation has meant testing the effectiveness of its health system and its response policies in the face of the pandemic’s emergency. The crisis has worsened the poorest’s vulnerability, deepening social and economic problems that the country already suffered. As in any emergency, feelings of fear and hopelessness have become widespread. The future is bleak, and the way forward is not always clear. And it is from these chaotic contexts that the Church continues to affirm faith in the God who comes to meet us, who draws near and walks with us (Luke. 24:15). It is in the Risen One who asks us with pastoral sensitivity: “Why are you sad?” (Luke 24:17, 38). Today, as before, the encounter with the Risen One continues to encourage communities of faith to live in God’s Shalom even amid crises. It is imperative to remember the God that incarnates in our history to bring times of salvation and healing.

Christian churches, organizations, and ministries continue to work in many parts of Mexico to bring comfort and hope. Following the model of Jesus in chapter 24 of the Gospel of Luke, the churches have reinvented themselves to continue accompanying the most vulnerable families and communities. The ecclesial proposals have diakonia and koinonia as their center. Service to those most in need is prioritized, accompanying them with spiritual and material resources. Likewise, new alternatives are created to cultivate communion and solidarity. The liturgy is lived as we walk, through witness and the breaking of bread.

For their part, theological seminaries develop initiatives to collaborate with the churches to incarnate the Gospel in the current situation. They are creating new pastoral accompaniment and chaplaincy programs, courses, and seminars that address different aspects of the ecclesial life. In the face of the pandemic crises, they respond with studies and field investigations to provide tools for pastors and lay leaders. That is part of the new academic proposal developed by the seminaries that are part of the Theological Community of Mexico (CTdeM). We pray that the churches in Mexico will continue to take up with courage the challenge of accompanying their communities in times of crisis. For the continuous renewal of its theological institutions so that they continue to generate contextual and pertinent proposals. For Global Ministries and the solidarity of the Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ churches. For the Church to continue to be a witness of the resurrection (Lk. 24:48). Amen.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Mexico:

El capítulo 24 del evangelio de Lucas recoge algunos testimonios de las primeras comunidades cristianas sobre la resurrección de Jesús. Mujeres y hombres que siguieron a Jesús desde Galilea hasta Jerusalén ahora son testigos de que el Señor ha resucitado. Previo a esto, la comunidad de discípulos de Jesús vivió un momento de crisis: Jesús nazareno había sido crucificado y ellos esperaban que él era el que había de liberar a Israel (Lc. 24:19-21). ¡Eran tiempos de incertidumbre y desesperanza! Había mucho dolor, miedo y confusión. ¿Cómo seguir creyendo en le proyecto del Reino de Dios anunciado por Jesús?

Llevamos un poco más de un año enfrentando la crisis sanitaria provocada por el Covid 19. Para México esta situación ha significado poner a prueba la eficacia de su sistema de salud y sus políticas de respuesta ante la emergencia de la pandemia. La crisis ha empeorado las condiciones de vulnerabilidad de los más pobres, profundizando problemáticas sociales y económicas que ya sufría el país. Como en toda crisis, se han generalizado sentimientos de temor y desesperanza. El futuro es sombrío y no siempre está claro el camino que se debe seguir. Y es desde estos contextos caóticos, que la iglesia sigue afirmando la fe en el Dios que viene a nuestro encuentro, que se acerca y camina con nosotros (Lc. 24:15). Es en el resucitado que Dios nos pregunta con sensibilidad pastoral: “¿Por qué están tristes?” (Lc. 24:17, 38). Hoy como antes, el encuentro con el resucitado sigue animando a las comunidades de fe a vivir en el Shalom de Dios aun en medio de las crisis. Es imperativo hacer memoria del Dios que acontece en la historia para traer tiempos de salvación y sanidad.

Las iglesias, organizaciones y ministerios cristianos continúan trabajando en muchos lugares de México para llevar consuelo y esperanza. Siguiendo el modelo de Jesús en el capitulo 24 del evangelio de Lucas, las iglesias se han reinventado para continuar acompañando a las familias y comunidades más vulnerables. Las propuestas eclesiales tienen como centro la diaconía y la koinonía. Se prioriza el servicio a los más necesitados acompañándolos con recursos espirituales y materiales. Así mismo, se crean nuevas alternativas para cultivar la comunión y la solidaridad. La liturgia se vive en el camino, a través del testimonio y el partimiento del pan.

Por su parte, los seminarios de educación teológica están desarrollando diversas iniciativas para colaborar con las iglesias en su tarea de encarnar el evangelio en la actual coyuntura: nuevos programas de acompañamiento pastoral y capellanía, cursos y seminarios que abordan distintos aspectos de la vida eclesial de cara a las crisis generadas por la pandemia, estudios e investigaciones de campo que provean herramientas a los agentes de pastoral. Estas y otras iniciativas son parte de la nueva propuesta académica de los seminarios que conforman la Comunidad Teológica de México (CTdeM).

Oramos para que las iglesias en México sigan asumiendo con valentía el desafío de acompañar a sus comunidades en tiempos de crisis. Por la continua renovación de sus instituciones teológicas, para que sigan generando propuestas contextuales y pertinentes. Por Ministerios Globales y la solidaridad de las iglesias Discípulos de Cristo y Unida de Cristo. Por la Iglesia, para que siga siendo testigo de la resurrección (Lc. 24:48). Amén.
