Pray for India on Sunday, July 6, 2014

Lectionary Selection: Genesis 24:34–38, 42–49, 58–67

Prayers for India:
O God, you are marvelous in all of your ways. Our hearts are filled with plans, but your purpose prevails.  You, in your infinite wisdom, have chosen us at this specific time and place to accomplish your purpose. You offer a Psalm“…if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”  We are encouraged, like Joshua, to be “strong and courageous……. for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Thank you for the invitation to spend time in your presence and commit plans and concerns to you. In the light of your presence, you strengthen our faith and remind us to walk in absolute trust – there is nothing too hard for you. Before we call, you answer. When we speak you hear.

Thank you for the sense of community and family who connect us and for the bonds of friendship moving beyond time and space. Thank you for the gift of India, for all that my eyes have seen and my heart has felt.

By faith, I ask you to grant success to the journey on which we have been called. Give strength to the weary and increase power to the weak. Comfort troubled hearts with your perfect peace. Heal those affected by illness or disease. Guide our hands and hearts daily as we serve you with a radiant smile to witness your love and compassion. O God, thank you for the comfort of your assurances and a peace that surpasses understanding.

Lift up the students at the Christian Hospital Mungeli School of Nursing to succeed in their studies and upcoming examinations. Keep their family and friends in prayer. Be with Human Resources for the Rambo Memorial English Medium School to excel and receive increased financial support.   

All this we ask, in the name of Jesus Christ,

Mission Stewardship Moment from India:
God awakens me morning by morning, awakens my ear to listen like one being taught.

The sweet beautiful melodies that fill the atmosphere in the early morning and again in our evening devotions are indescribable. I hear Hindi… no wait, I hear English. It is the nursing students……. their voices showering God’s ears with loving praise in two languages. It ignites internal sparks within me and my heart leaps as I join in singing:

 

 प्रभु का आत्मा मेरे दिल में ले जाता है जब दाऊद गाया जैसे मैं गाऊंगा

When the Spirit of the Lord moves in my heart, I will sing like David sang

प्रभु का आत्मा मेरे दिल में ले जाता है जब दाऊद की प्रशंसा की तरह, मैं प्रशंसा करेंगे

When the Spirit of the Lord moves in my heart, I will praise like David praised

 

These young ladies have contagious smiles that beam as bright as their voices. Their questions  to me flow like a long stream with one repeating phrase: “Will you friend me?”  I am honored and reply, “Oh, yes, I would love to!”  This was also my reply when I was asked and agreed to join them on a medical outreach day in the neighboring village of Daukapa.

The relationships between the hospital and the community are evident in the warm reception and smiles witnessed as we entered each home. Because most residents lack the resources to travel to the hospital, nursing students, accompanied by a supervising nurse tutor, visit communities each day for one month to render medical services.

Nursing students perform a variety of medical assessments, such as recording vital signs, reviewing medical history and medications, therapeutic diet counseling, evaluations of newborn babies, children, and adults, issuing medications as necessary, and working in cooperation with each patient regarding various health conditions, treatment or life-style modification, and compliance with recommendations given. 

After a long, hot day we conclude the visit and board the bus to begin the journey back to the hospital. The day ends as beautifully as it begins, with a bus ride filled with laughter, singing, and many questions stirring inside. 

Medical outreach visits bless the patient and enrich the lives of nursing students who are learning how to practice skills to assess and treat minor ailments.
