Pray for Korea on Sunday, March 12, 2017
Lectionary Selection: John 3:1-17 or Matthew 17:1-9
Prayers for Korea:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your unfailing love, grace, mercy, and gift of salvation. For you loved us so much, that you gave your one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. By faith, we receive this gift and know that nothing can separate us from your love in Christ Jesus.
Lord, we honor you. For you are the master and we are the clay. Mold us and let your Spirit continue to guide us, and touch our hearts that we may have the zeal to walk in the light of your presence each day. Purify and renew our hearts that, from the depth of its abundance, we can speak words of love, not hate; trust, not fear; peace, not discord; inclusion, and not exclusion; encouragement, and not destruction. Enable us to empathize with the plight of others and see them with the heart and mind of Christ.
In the name of Jesus, we pray,
Amen
Mission Stewardship Moment from Korea:
Truly amazing! This describes a special group of ecumenical co-workers here in Korea. The members of our diverse group come from Canada, Philippines, USA, Germany, and India. With a broad scope of talents and professions, we come together on the second Tuesday of each month for fellowship. More importantly, we engage in meaningful dialogue to keep abreast of Korean and world events, politics, peace and justice issues, governmental abuses of power, and how all of these things affect the lives of people. We examine the churches’ role and our work in being advocates and co-laborers in the fight for these causes. We also serve as a supportive brace for each other and the work and programs that we are connected with. “I like to meet people from outside Korea, who work in the church as I do; to share experiences and to reflect our life together,” states Rev. Volker Thiedemann, Pastor of Evangelische Gemeinde Deutscher Sprache in Seoul.
Our monthly gathering of mission coworkers stems from a group of missionaries from the U.S., Canada, and Germany that united to form a Monday Night Group. Their purpose was to disseminate information into their countries and the world regarding peace, justice, and human rights violations that were occurring in Korea throughout the 1970s and 80s. These brave coworkers supported prisoners of conscience and their families, sheltered those wanted by the police, and wrote articles and smuggled them by various means to the media and churches in their countries to relay the harsh realities of the ongoing struggles of the Korean people. Some were caught and questioned but were not prosecuted. One of our dear members, Marion Kim, was a member of the Monday Night Group. Her presence gives us a connection and continuity with the former group.
