Prayers for South Korea:

You are our strength and our song. Thank you for each day in which you allow us to experience, trust, and receive your unfailing love. From the depths of our hearts, we sing praises unto you. God of love and peace, guide us by the wisdom, power, and truth of your word.

kore_2016_kahala_cannon_03.jpegLord, quietly whisper in our ears and give us a gentle nudge to remind us to take time out to reflect on your truths throughout the course of our day. Speak to our consciousness, so that we will never forget to remain watchful because no one knows the day or hour of the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ. Ignite our hearts and minds to always be in the state of preparing so that we will be ready for the day of His return.

Let us not fall asleep on our duties thinking, “Oh, I have plenty time.” Empower us to be purposeful in spending time in your presence, walking in obedience and in our purpose, loving our neighbors as ourselves, living out the Great Commission, standing against every form of injustice, and being the voice for the voiceless.

Lord, we thank You and honor You. In Jesus name we pray,

Amen.

Mission Stewardship Moment from South Korea:

kore_2016_kahala_cannon_04.jpegOne one, one one is the acronym for November 11, 2016.  On this day, two days after the Presidential Election in the United States of America, the Public Mission and Ministry for Justice class at Hanshin University, Graduate School of Theology, and our professor, stood in solidarity with clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) and the National Council of Churches (NCCK). Together, we took a stance calling for Park Geun-hye to resign from office as the President of the Republic of Korea. We stood united as one voice to speak out against the anti-democratic abuse of power that was committed by President Park. Our voices and signs resonated through the streets of Jonggak and Gwanghwamun in Seoul, Korea after an energizing prayer service at Hyangrin Presbyterian Church.

Through hymns, songs, and chants, we captured the attention and the hearts of those on the streets as we marched. As I glanced at the faces of on-lookers in the crowd, I noticed Koreans and non-Koreans, men and women, and young and old. Some demonstrated their solidarity through cheers, others took pictures and recorded video, and others watched from their cars, bicycles, open doors of stores and businesses, or the sidewalk on which they stood.

kore_2016_kahala_cannon_05.jpeg“Tell the story. Share it with your friends,” stated a first year graduate student at Hanshin University, as I took pictures during the march. Along the route, PROK and NCCK leaders were flanked by a wooden cross and PROK flags symbolizing freedom, justice, victory, and peace. They rendered moving speeches followed by prayer in front of three key locations in the heart of the city of Seoul: The Bosingak Bell Tower, Daelim Building, and the Government Complex in the Sewol Perry Square at Gwanghwanum.

One day later, a mass protest was held in the heart of Seoul. An astonishing 1 million people were in attendance demanding the resignation of President Park Geun-hye. The people have spoken. They demand that their voices be heard and the demonstrations will continue until President Park Geun-hye complies with the will of the people.
