Pray with Puerto Rico Sunday, November 22, 2020
Lectionary Selection: Matthew 25:31-46
Prayers for Puerto Rico:
God,
Creator of what we see, and we cannot see, thank you for your everlasting presence among us. We ask for your overflowing love, and mercy, to be poured over the island and the people of Puerto Rico as your living water pour your daily blessing over us. Be the mighty fortress for those still displaced by the continuous earthquakes of the southwest region of the island. Be the shelter of new hope, of new life, for those still waiting and feeling ignored by the authorities to fully recover from the hurricanes, from the uncertainty of the pandemic, and all the natural disasters that have impacted Puerto Rico’s normality and tranquility.
May your grace be the guiding light to continue blessing the least among us; to continue blessing our brothers and sisters; providing for their needs; comforting them in times of sorrow, and sharing your redeeming gospel of hope and mercy with all. Make us oh, Lord, the hands and feet of your assistance. May our words reveal to the world our faithfulness and commitment to your gospel and service. May our actions, be the living testimony of our faith. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ we pray, amen.
Mission Stewardship Moment from Puerto Rico:
Jesus’s reply in Matthew 25:46, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me,” is a call to get up and place our words and resources into action.
In Puerto Rico, AMANESER 2025 continues using renewable resources such as solar power and rainwater in support of the disadvantaged communities throughout the island. The Council of Churches of Puerto Rico, a council of ecumenical leaders, continues their intentional work toward eradicating injustice and systematic discrimination. There’s also the joint work of the local congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Puerto Rico, and the United Evangelical Church of Puerto Rico. Work that has grown into centers of distribution of meals and groceries, and shelter for those in need. Furthermore, led by the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, conversations, dialogues, and teaching opportunities have become common among the communities. These new experiences have open opportunities to exchange theological thoughts and how the Gospel relates to our daily lives.
I give thanks for these ministries and their witness. For, “‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'” (Matthew 25:40)
