South Sudan Council of Churches

The South Sudan Council of Churches (SSCC) is an ecumenical body comprised of seven member churches and associate churches in South Sudan with a strong legacy of peace-building, reconciliation, and advocacy. The SSCC provides a platform to enhance ecumenical cooperation towards collective action for peace.

As South Sudan became an independent country in 2011, the decision to establish a separate ecumenical organization for South Sudan was reached through a lengthy process undertaken at the SCC’s 20th General Assembly from 3 to 7 July 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. 

The council’s current mission covers civic education, advocacy, peace and reconciliation, and relief and development services. These activities are all carried out either directly by the council or indirectly through its member churches.

OBJECTIVES

1. Promote mutual understanding, respect, and interaction locally and nationally between Christian Churches, inspired by the prayer of Jesus: “That all of them may be one” (John 17:11)
2. Promote understanding of Christian faith, morals, and culture in society and strengthen the Christian presence in the public arena.
3. Promote cooperation on the Church’s call to mission locally, nationally, and globally.
4. Promote respect for freedom of religion and human rights in legislation and practice at all levels.
5. Work to break down barriers between people and groups and create justice, peace, and reconciliation.
6. Work to protect creation against destruction so that all may experience the fullness of life.
7. Contribute nationally, regionally, and internationally to creating and developing good relations between Christian and other faith communities.
8. Participate in ecumenical organizations and inter-religious bodies and contexts.
