WCC extends sympathy to people affected by wildfires in Greece

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay extended sympathy to the region northeast of Athens, Greece, as hundreds of people have been told to evacuate while more than 600 firefighters try to save their homes and land.

“As thousands of residents are told to flee their homes, they fear for their lives, for their loved ones, and their future,” wrote Pillay. “I express sympathy and solidarity from all the churches in our worldwide fellowship.”

He also expressed thanks and appreciation to all the firefighters and the many people reaching out to help their neighbors. “May God bless them with strength in this important mission,” he wrote. “We stand with you in prayer and support, and we pledge our continued best efforts in this existential test for all humanity.”
